Embracing Staycations over Vacations

Although I don’t usually prescribe to the whole “FOMO” phenomenon (look it up) I have always been of the opinion that long stretches of vacation days (4 or more) automatically call for a trip somewhere new.  I feel like it’s a waste to use up valuable vacation time around the house, even more so if you already have a work/life balance through hybrid work which means you can do those things during your non vacation days.  But unfortunately, hard times are common now, especially financial limitations.  With everything going up in prices vacations are becoming not just a luxury but outright out of reach, especially for a family of four.

So I had to look at staycations more seriously and instead of being depressed about it, especially given my jet setting ways in an earlier life not too long ago, I had to look at the true pros and cons of this new part of my life.  Let’s start with the cons which to me are much more obvious.

Cons:

  • Lack of Novelty: The novelty of a “new” destination may be missing. You might find yourself encountering familiar sights and sounds, which can feel less exciting than exploring a completely new environment.
  • Potential for Distractions: The temptations of everyday life might creep in, such as work emails, household chores, or the urge to check in on social media.
  • Limited “Escape” Factor: While a staycation offers a break from routine, it may not provide the same sense of escape as traveling to a far-off land.

Pros:

  • Convenience is King: Forget the stress of airports, long flights, and unfamiliar territories. Staycations eliminate travel fatigue and allow for maximum relaxation.
  • Cost-Effective: Skip expensive flights, accommodation, and pricey tourist traps. Most cities, whether its where you live or close by, offer a wealth of free activities, from exploring parks to enjoying free concerts and festivals.
  • Supporting Local Businesses: By choosing to stay and play locally, you directly support your local economy. From local restaurants and shops to independent attractions, your spending dollars make a real impact.
  • Rediscovering Your City: Staycations offer a chance to rediscover the hidden gems of your own city. Explore neighborhoods you’ve never visited, revisit favorite spots with a fresh perspective, and uncover new and exciting attractions.
  • Pet-Friendly Adventures: Although I don’t have a pet, I can imagine that bringing your furry friend along for the ride would be a lot easier. Staycations make it easy to include your pets in your vacation plans.
  • Environmental Impact: Minimizing travel distances significantly reduces your carbon footprint. Opt for eco-friendly accommodations and transportation options to further minimize your environmental impact.

Tips for a stress-free staycation:

  • Plan Ahead: Create a proper itinerary, even if it’s just a loose schedule. This helps you make the most of your time and avoid feeling aimless.
  • Embrace the Unexpected: Be open to spontaneous adventures and unexpected discoveries.
  • Treat Yourself: Indulge in a special meal at a fine-dining restaurant, book a spa treatment, or enjoy a unique experience like a hot air balloon ride.
  • Unplug: Make a conscious effort to disconnect from work and technology as much as possible.

Ultimately, the success of your staycation depends on your mindset. Embrace the opportunity to rediscover your city, support local businesses, and enjoy a relaxed and rejuvenating break without the hassle of long-distance travel.  More importantly your pocketbook and budget balance sheet will thank you for it after all is said and done.  You will be happiest when you look at your bank account at the end of your trip and you won’t be completely left for broke.
