Going back, looks like it’s inevitable
After months (or even years) of remote work, the prospect of returning to the office can feel daunting. Whether you’re excited or apprehensive, I know I am anxiety ridden by the idea, this transition requires adjustment. To help with that adjustment here are 6 tips to help navigate this change:
1. Acknowledge and Address Your Feelings:
- Identify your anxieties: What specifically are you worried about? (e.g., commute, social interaction, losing productivity, adjusting to a new routine)
- Communicate with your employer: If you have concerns about the return-to-office plan, discuss them openly with your manager.
- Seek support: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about your feelings.
2. Prepare for the Practicalities:
- Re-establish a routine: Gradually shift your sleep schedule and mealtimes to align with your pre-pandemic work routine.
- Plan your commute: If you’re driving, practice your route during off-peak hours. If you’re taking public transportation, familiarize yourself with schedules and potential delays.
- Update your work wardrobe: If necessary, refresh your professional attire.
3. Ease Back In:
- Start with a shorter week: If possible, begin with a few shorter days in the office to ease into the transition.
- Schedule social time: Plan to have lunch with colleagues or attend after-work events to reconnect.
- Prioritize self-care: Make time for exercise, relaxation techniques, and activities that help you de-stress.
4. Optimize Your Work Environment:
- Claim your space: Find a comfortable and productive workspace in the office.
- Personalize your desk: Bring in photos, plants, or other personal items to make your workspace feel more inviting.
- Communicate your boundaries: Let colleagues know when you need to focus and minimize distractions.
5. Embrace the Benefits:
- Reconnect with colleagues: Enjoy face-to-face interactions and build stronger relationships.
- Access resources: Take advantage of office amenities like printers, meeting rooms, and company events.
- Improve work-life balance: A clear separation between work and home can improve your work-life balance.
6. Be Patient and Flexible:
- It may take time to adjust: Don’t get discouraged if you don’t feel completely comfortable right away.
- Be open to change: Be willing to adapt and find what works best for you in this new environment.
- Advocate for yourself: If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to communicate your needs to your employer.
Remember that the return to the office is a unique experience for everyone and is also affected by your employer. Be kind to yourself, prioritize your well-being, and focus on finding a balance that works for you. This transition may present challenges, but it also offers opportunities for renewed connection and a fresh perspective.
